BattleAxe has been around nearly two-decades as part of the Laughing Loggers entertainment events. Their home base being down in the lower mainland of BC.
I met Ben, the owner of Laughing Loggers back in 2016 at a loggersports event. That’s the thing with this unique sport of lumberjacks and lumberjills, it’s like an instant community. For some folks, loggersports people become like family. I used to compete in loggersports when I attended Lakehead University for my undergrad degree in Forestry. I wanted to compete again and just like that Ben became a friend, mentor and coach.
I saw the BattleAxe logo and I instantly wanted to do that. How could I make this be something that’s part of my life? Since the beginning, Ben was supportive of the idea for when the time was right. What idea? There was nothing specific, just a floating dream that I held onto as I continued walking on my path of juggling forestry work, being a mom and doing it on my own. We chatted about it here and there, keeping the dream up there in the clouds, ready to be plucked when the timing was right. That time came this year in 2021. I called Ben and the stars aligned for handing off the BattleAxe torch. Or in this case, the axe.
I love loggersports and I used to compete on a team during my Forestry undergrad at Lakehead University. Ironically, my events did not include axe throwing. I was better at other events like sawing and chopping. And other team members were better than me at axe throwing (I’m still not a pro but I sure love hearing the thunk of an axe head sinking into a target). But no matter what we were all part of this team. This family. This bond. We had fun together and helped each other out.
My loggersports days are ones for the books and will never be forgotten. I want to bring this joy and community back into my life and whoever else feels or thinks that they’d like to have something like that in their life. It’s hard to turn away from fun and community. A place to belong. So why not the other events? Well, axe throwing is one of the easier events that most people can do. So, I decided to bring a little slice of heaven back into my life and into the lives of others. A place where everyone can belong.
